Inspired By Sachin Tendulkar, Shafali Verma Leads India To U19 Women's World Cup Triumph

The Shafali Verma-led Indian junior women’s cricket team has won the Under-19 T20 World Women’s Cup, thereby creating history. Saifali Verma is indeed an evolving star in the world of women’s cricket. She is also the first woman cricketer who represented India across all three formats at the age of 15. 

Shafali Verma was born in Haryana on 28 January 2004. In 2013, Shafali went to the Ranji Trophy match in Rohtak with her father. There she asked about Sachin Tendulkar, in response, Sanjeev Verma, Saifali Verma’s father said he is the best player in the world of cricket. Shafali was so inspired by the legend that she decided to practice hard and play for the Indian cricket team.

After Seeing the magic of Sachin Tendulkar in the Ranji Trophy match, Shafali Verma expressed her wish to play like him. Her father ignored her wish in the beginning. However, she was bent upon playing cricket and insisted on getting the bat. Her passion for the game was growing and she played whenever she got a chance. 

Her father initially took her to many cricket academies, but she was refused as it was believed girls are not the perfect fit for the game. However, her stubbornness helped her go ahead and she met with Anish Sharma at the Shriram Cricket Academy. 

Saifali scored a half-century in international cricket when she was 15, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 30-year-old record.

About the Cricketing Career of Shafali Verma

Saifali Verma has flourished to become a popular right-handed batsman. In 2019, she made her international debut against South Africa in the women’s T20 match. She became the youngest to make a fifty against West Indies in international cricket. She was also chosen as the ‘Player of the Series’ in the same series of T20 matches against West Indies where she made 158 runs. 

The Indian women’s cricket team under the captaincy of Shafali Verma beat England in the final inaugural edition of the Under-19 ICC Women’s World Cup by seven wickets. It was India’s first ICC world title in women’s cricket. 

The Under-19 women’s team will be felicitated by Sachin Tendulkar. The BCCO has declared a cash reward of ₹5 crore for the Indian U-19 team. Shweta Sehrawat, Indian opener became the top run-scorer. She scored 297 runs. Roger Binny, the all-rounder of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning and the current BCCI president has praised the Under-19 team girl team for their ‘fearless cricket’ in the South African tournament. He congratulated the Under-19 Indian Women’s team for their outstanding performance at the ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup. He further added the team had a ‘fearless approach’ that enabled them to create a history. This notable achievement of the team will act as a benchmark and inspire the upcoming cricketers. 

Shafali Verma received her maiden call-up for the WT20I owing to her exceptional batting skills. On instagram, she shared a picture with Sachin Tendulkar and wrote a caption stating ‘ The reason I took up this game was because of Sachin Sir.’ She also added that her entire family has not only idolised him but has also worshipped him. She feels lucky to meet her childhood hero and further mentioned that ‘It was a dream come true for me’.
