Before making his main debut, Tim Southee represented New Zealand in the Under-19 cricket from 2006-2009. In his Under-19 career, he played a total of 13 one-day cricket matches and a three-match Test series against India in 2007. He took a total of 20 wickets with an average of 18.2, but the Test series was a draw. The 2008 Under-19 World Cup declared Tim Southee as the Man of the Tournament and he rose to fame thereafter.

Tim Southee debut match for the T20 cricket format was on February 05, 2008, against England. His test debut was on March 22, 2008, against England at McLean Park. He took 5 wickets and made 77 off 40 balls with nine sixes in the second innings of his debut test match.
