IPL 2023: Marco And Duan Jansen Make History As The First-Ever Twins To Play In The IPL

The Indian Premier League featured the astounding performances of numerous cricketers which included many sibling pairs. However, this time the Indian Premier League showcased a unique addition: Duan Jansen and Marco Jansen, the first-ever identical twin brothers to get featured in IPL history. 

The twins were seen to turn for their respective teams Mumbai Indians and Sunrise Hyderabad and battle against each other for the first time. Duan Stated that they never played against each other and they wanted to do so. Hence after getting an opportunity with Mumbai Indians, he was extremely excited and was looking forward to making the most of the opportunity. 

Marco Jansen and Duan Jansen’s Debut in the Indian Premier League

Marco Jansen made his debut in the Indian Premier League on 9th April 2021 for Mumbai Indians and played against RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore). Marco then got contracted to Sunrise Hyderabad. Jansen is a force to be remembered as a notable bowler. He is equally efficient as a middle-order batsman. Duan started his career in the IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2023. 

At the age of 17, both Marco and Duan Janson were chosen to bowl in the nets for the tourist Indian team. Their pace and accuracy caught the attention of Virat Kohli. A similar kind of duel happened between the Pathan brothers where it was seen that Irfan Pathan attempted to get through the outside edge of Yusuf Pathan’s willow. 

Duan Janson made his debut in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians against KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders). Duan could make 53 runs in four overs and could take only one wicket and hence he could not make a significant mark. The match created an unprecedented record of featuring the first twin pair ever that too against each other.

Marco Jansen’s inception in List A in the 2017 - 2018 CSA Provincial One-day Challenge for North West. Further, in 2018- 2019, Marco made his top-grade inception in the CSA Day-3 Provincial Cup for North West. 

It was 26th December 2021, when Marco Jansen made his debut in the international test against India. Later in January 2022, he played in the ODI for the first time for South Africa. The match was against India. It was in June 2022, when Marco made his debut in the T20I against India. 

Duan Jansen’s Debit in Other Cricket Tournaments

Duan Jansen is blessed with bowling prowess just like his brother. This left-arm pacer has the potential to bowl at above 140 kmp. This South African all-rounder made his debut and started to play domestic cricket in 2019. He got the chance to play in the other two formats in 2019. In 2021 - 2022, Duan had his breakthrough season. He grabbed the attention of all the cricket enthusiasts. He took six wickets in the CSA T20 Provincial Cup. 

Later he got selected for the Caribbean Premier League, where he turned out to be a leading bowler in the 6ixty tournament, helping the team bag the trophy. Duan was then selected in the IPL auction which gave him the opportunity to compete with his brother. 

Marco and Duan Jansen, the South African twin brothers created a history playing against each other in the Indian Premier League. While Marco was a part of the IPL franchise from 2021, Duan was selected in the later years. When asked about his selection in Mumbai Indians, the player said that his brother Marco did not warn him of anything about Mumbai Indians. Marco has told him to go ahead and enjoy the matches. He also added that he is different and he will bring something different to the table.
