Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, decided to move forward with Andy Flower, a Zimbabwe cricketer.
After a six-place finish in IPL 2023, RCB decided not to renew the contracts of Sanjay Bangar (head coach) and Mike Hesson (director of cricket operations).
For two seasons, Andy Flower was the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants; however, he was replaced by Justin Langer, the Australian coach.
Flower is a well-known cricketer and coach. He has held top positions in world cricket, including as Team Director of England and head coach for an extended time. When he joined RCB, Flower said that he was thrilled to experience the Chinnaswamy atmosphere next season.
Andy Flower told the media that RCB has a huge fan base, and he can't wait to experience Chinnaswamy's atmosphere next season. He said that he respects the coaches Sanjay Bangar and Mike Hesson and acknowledges the work they have done. Moreover, he is looking forward to taking RCB to a new level.
Flower revealed that he is excited to work again with Faf du Plessis and establish new partnerships. He said that they had worked together earlier, and he wants to make their relationship better.
Mike Hesson joined RCB in 2019 and Sanjay Bangar in 2022 after Simon Katich, the Australian, left the franchise. Although their contracts were up for renewal this year, RCB decided to go the other way and overhaul the coaching team.
Under the leadership of Hesson, in 2020 and 2021, RCB reached the knockouts and got eliminated by SunRisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. Next season, they passed the elimination but couldn't reach another IPL as they lost to Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.
Sanjay Bangar is said to be the all-rounder in Indian domestic cricket. He has been around the cricket for over a decade now. In just his second Test match, he scored an unbeatable hundred against Zimbabwe.
Bangar was named as India-A coach and was even the batting coach for India's national cricket team.
In the recent season, RCB's performance wasn't that great and definitely could have been better. Despite extremely close wins and a few outings, they still stayed at number six.
