It Has Gone Way Better Than Expected: SA Pacer Marco Jansen Reflects On First Year In International Cricket

After making his Test cricket debut late in 2021 against India, Marco Jansen has played at the highest level for an entire year. Taking 36 wickets at an average of 19.02 in eight Tests this year, this tall left-arm quick has made quite an impact. He has also shown what he can offer with the bat, scoring his first career half-century in the second Test in Melbourne. In addition, he has been shortlisted for the ICC's Emerging Cricketer of the Year award.

SA Marco Jansen, a pacer, looks back on his debut season in the international game

South African bowling all-rounder Marco Jansen said he was pleased with the first year of his international cricket career, calling it "better than expected." The Proteas are currently down 2-0 to Australia in their away series, and their batting attack has been unable to turn the tide. This issue has been spotlighted in the  domestic T20 league SA20.

After Marco Jasen test cricket debut late in 2021 against India, Jansen has played at the highest level for an entire year. Taking 36 wickets at an average of 19.02 in eight Tests this year, this tall left-arm quick has made quite an impact. He has also shown what he can offer with the bat, scoring his first career half-century in the second Test in Melbourne. In addition, he is a candidate for the ICC's Emerging Cricketer of the Year award.

He had a wicket on his first delivery in the opening Test at the Gabba, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, and finished with statistics of 3/32. He was only 1/89 in Melbourne, however. The numbers don't justify his effectiveness with the ball, especially in his second-day spell to Steve Smith. Jansen said he was unaware he was a problem for the great batter until pacer Kagiso Rabada informed him otherwise.

How did his Teammates support him?

Imagine KG(Kagiso Rabada)  came to me and said, "Listen, Jansen keep going just because of the fact that he is  not  comfortable. I gave up on him after bowling three overs. It wasn't until later that Jansen realised he was facing difficulty. "I failed to recognise that he was finding it difficult rather than just difficult," he said.

For Marco Jansen, it's important to keep an eye out for opportunities, and when he does, he gives it all. It doesn't matter if you're better with the ball, the field or the bat. So, as KG ( Kagiso Rabada) came to Marco, he knew he couldn't just bowl a floater; instead, he needed to stay on him in the hopes of picking up a wicket.

Marco Jansen and his brother were introduced to Cricket by their dad. He was the one who regularly joined in their backyard cricket games. And because he was involved in a sport then, he is the first person they've met who can explain the game's finer points to them. Marco Jansen's father and brother always supported him. He plays well and always prepares for upcoming challenges. Not only from the bat but from the ball also Marco Jansen show his talent. South African Players are lucky to have him in their team.
