Noor Ahmad: From Afghanistan Under-19 Team To Gujarat Titans, Following The Footsteps Of Idol Rashid Khan

Noor Ahmad's impressive play for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2023 has garnered widespread attention after former Afghanistan captain Raees Ahmadzai discovered him.

Introducing Noor Ahmad in brief

Do you know Noor Ahmad’s age? The 18-year-old was a timid boy, just 13 years old, when he was first spotted by the Raees Ahmadzai. Khost Province native Noor, a junior at the Afghanistan Cricket Board's Kabul training camp, seemed a little out of place and barely spoke to the coaches or other trainees.

However, Ahmadzai was grinning a while later as he hurled spin at the batters in the nets. Ahmadzai was confident that if given the proper guidance, this quiet young man could greatly impact the cricketing world.

Five years later, Noor proved Ahmadzai right.

Do you know about the important Noor Ahmad matches? Noor played for Afghanistan at the Under-19 World Cup in 2020 and again in 2022. He was instrumental in helping Afghanistan reach the semifinals in the 2019 tournament in the West Indies. He took seven wickets in five games at an economy rate of 3.93 in the upcoming edition in South Africa. After six games, he finished tied for second in wickets with 10.

Noor has joined fellow Afghan and Gujarat Titans teammate Rashid Khan in the just-finished Indian Premier League 2023. Noor has represented Afghanistan at the Under-19 and Senior Men's World Cups.

It's true; he's faster than me, bhai.

Noor Ahmad used to gather his pals around the TV to watch the Afghanistan team play cricket long before he ever picked up the sport himself. Like many other young cricketers, he aspired to follow in Rashid's footsteps and play for his country. Even when his older brother Mohamad Noor enrolled him in cricket lessons, he still desired to  be "like Rashid," one day, said his local coaches.

The very promising ‘Noor' was showcased to Rashid by Ahmadzai during an Afghanistan practice at the centre wicket in Kabul. By then, Rashid was familiar with him but needed to learn about his bowling prowess. So, he agreed to show up and cheer for Noor while he bowled. Ahmadzai tasked Rashid with giving the right-hand batter a bad 'one' bowl. "Bhai, he is quicker than me," Rashid told Ahmadzai. Hearing these words from his ideal boosted Noor's confidence.

His 'idol’s' words of praise did wonders for Noor's self-esteem.

Not long after, the Afghanistan Cricket Board held a four-day game for young players, and Noor showed his mettle with the bat and the ball.

Noor Ahmad scored 17 runs and tackled Naseem Shah exceptionally well in Pakistan during the 2019 Asia Cup. That's another one of his skills: he's clutch at the plate. During the T20 World Cup, Ahmadzai advised his teammate to bowl two or three overs before the game. "He puts in a lot of effort. He never complained about being exhausted. He would bowl three or four overs before each game and then take the pitch. We're fortunate to have such a gifted individual on our team.

When Nabi and Rashid made it into the IPL for the first time in 2017, it was a game-changer for Afghan cricket. Even though several mystery spinners' have competed in the tournament over the past six years, Noor Ahmad has generated genuine excitement about himself.

The cricketing world already sees the 18-year-old as Afghanistan's next big thing, and he hopes to reach the top alongside his "idol," Rashid. Noor Ahmad’s ODI career is waiting for him. We hope he gets a chance to play international matches soon.
