Piyush Chawla was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on December 24, 1988. Piyush Chawla first played cricket when he was only 15 years old. He was chosen to play for the U19 team in test games against England. Throughout the two games, he took 13 wickets.

In 2005-2006, he was on the Indian under-19 team that won a limited-overs series 4-1 against Australia. His success in the under-19 age group continued, though. In 2006, he won the ICC under-19 World Cup. He was the star in the final, taking four wickets in eight overs.
