Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes First Player In IPL To Be Retired Out

During Rajasthan Royals' high-stakes match against Lucknow SuperGiants, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin became the first player in IPL history to be retired. With Rajasthan's batting in a precarious position with four down for 67, Ashwin delivered a key knock of 28 runs off just 23 balls. The experienced all-rounder made the selfless decision to retire in the penultimate over so that Riyan Parag, better able to clear the boundary rope in the last overs, could bat in the middle.

First-ever IPL player retirement: Ravichandran Ashwin

Do you know about the latest Ravichandran Ashwin news? Ashwin left the pitch in the middle of his batting to allow Riyan Parag to come out and bat for the Rajasthan Royals against the Lucknow SuperGiants in the IPL 2022.

When he made the call, the off-spinner had scored 28 runs off 23 balls with the help of two fours. When Ashwin came in, RR was in a tough spot at 67/4, but he and Shimron Hetmyer put up a crucial partnership. When he rescued RR from danger though, he made a decision that no IPL batter had ever made: he retired.

Few hitters have done so anywhere, let alone in the lucrative Indian tournament. Ravichandran Ashwin is only the fourth player to be retired from a Twenty20 match. The other four players are Shahid Afridi of Pakistan, S Tobagy of Bhutan, and Sunzamul Islam of the Cummila Warriors.

Meanwhile, Ashwin's batting partner Hetmyer said that he had yet to learn if it was a tactical move on Ashwin's part. Hetmyer hit 59 not out off 36 balls to help lead Delhi Capitals to 165/6.

“I was completely unaware of Ashwin's retirement; he seemed worn out,” Hetmyer remarked after DC's innings were through, "It was a good decision, as the kid (Parag) hit a six for us."

Who is Ravichandran Ashwin?

Due to his dismal showing as a junior opening batter, Ravichandran Ashwin was converted to an off-break bowler. First appearing in a first-class match for Tamil Nadu in December 2006, he took over as captain the following year. Not until he played for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2010 Indian Premier League did his economical bowling and international debut in limited-overs formats get public knowledge.

At the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 held in South Africa, he took the most wickets and was named the tournament's top player. He also participated in India's 2011 Cricket World Cup winning team.

Ravichandran Ashwin became famous after leading the Chennai Super Kings to an India Premier League title in 2010. The selectors were intrigued by his performance under duress and his ability to bowl in various styles, and they predicted that he would one day become India's best spinner. Ashwin began his career as a much sought-after hitter for Tamil Nadu, but he easily bowled in the domestic circuit. He wore the Indian uniform in 2010 and impressed the league's top players with his deft touch on the ball.
