Rinku Singh’s Journey: From Getting Beaten Up For Playing Cricket To IPL

The Surprising Back Story of KKR’s Left-handed Top Batsman and Right-handed Off-spinner Rinku Singh The cricketer was born into a modest family in Aligarh. It is reported that Rinku lived in a two-room quarter with his extended family. 

Rinku Singh’s journey is indeed one of hard work and persuasion, as quoted by Abhishek Nayar. Taking up Cricket as a professional career was not easy for the cricketer. Rinku Singh recalls being beaten up by his father for wanting to play cricket. 

His brothers were his most prominent supporters throughout the cricketer's journey. Rinku started playing cricket alongside elders when the sport caught his eye. Later, the cricketer learned the technical part of the sport from longtime coach Masood-uz-Zafar.

After Rinku proved his passion to his father by winning a bike in a school tournament in 2012 with the title of Man-of-the-Match, his father never touched him again. 

“My father didn’t really want me to play cricket. He always used to insist that I should focus on studies.” Rinku told kkr.in.

“In 2012, they had organised a World Cup where teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh came to play. I scored 354 runs and took 8 wickets, because of which I was given a Man-of-the-Series award and a bike. My parents were present on the ground. My father used to often beat me up whenever I wanted to play cricket, but after this match, he never touched me again.” 

The Start of His Career

Rinku Singh age 25, is a cricketer who currently plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and for Uttar Pradesh. Rinku Singh Debut match was for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket at the Under-16, Under-19, Under-23, and Central Zone levels at the Under-19 level in March 2014. 

In 2018, the cricketer went to the Mumbai Indian trials and made 95 runs in 31 balls in one of the matches before the auction. Both KKR and the Mumbai Indians are big names in the league. Expected to be chosen by the Mumbai Indians, the cricketer was supported by Kuldeep Yadav, who sent a letter to KKR for Rinku Singh. 

In much anticipation, Rinku Singh was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 80 lakh in the auction held in 2018.  Which sealed an end to the family's misery. Rinku Singh today owns a house and has gifted his father a car with his hard-earned wealth.  

Rinku Singh Debut match in the IPL was under KKR in the year 2018. The Cricketer scored 953 runs, including four centuries, in 10 matches with an average of 105.44. Rinku Singh gives credit to his coach, Abhishek Nayar, under the KKR academy, for the cricketer's impeccable performance in the match. The academy enhanced the cricketer's domestic performance.
