Virender Sehwag tweeted 'wrist magician' on VVS Laxman's birthday

On his 44th birthday, the former swashbuckling Indian opener wrote a great tweet to old colleague VVS Laxman. Laxman, regarded as one of India's top Test batters, was recognised for his magical wrist technique and excellent defence. Sehwag referred to him as the wrist magician and a special man on his birthday.

Laxman and Sehwag played a few matches together for India before retiring. The pair used to be India's top-order strength in Tests, sharing multiple stands in many memorable triumphs.

Why was VVS Laxman called "The man with wrists of steel"

The legacy of VVS is far more than just numbers. He was a tough guy. His relentless focus earned him the title of batting monk and wrists of steel. He should be remembered for the several times he saved India from defeat. He had some of his greatest innings near the close of his career.

His 79 in the second innings in Perth in 2008 came at a critical juncture following the aftermath of Sydney, when he stood as a lone fighter as he has throughout his career. In the Test match, no other Indian batter scored 50 runs in the second innings.

Who can forget his batting brilliance against the lethal spin of Suraj Randiv in Colombo in 2010? Against all odds, VVS Laxman always shined the brightest in all his matches.

It must be our misfortune that he has opted to leave the international game too soon, not even taking the opportunity to say a befitting farewell to the game in a pair of home Tests against the Kiwis.

We have to rub our eyes in disbelief that a batsman who was at his best when accumulating runs gracefully even when he had only the tail for company, as he did most famously to win a Test against the Aussies on home soil in Mohali just when it seemed all was lost, will no longer be batting with the India crest on his brave chest. He is one of India's most celebrated cricketers and will be known as "Steel Wrists" forever.
