Early Life and Background

Born in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1990, James Faulkner developed a passion for cricket at a young age and played his first and only test cricket match on August 21, 2013. Growing up, Faulkner displayed immense dedication to the sport and spent countless hours honing his skills. He is the son of Peter Faulkner, who, too, had a career in first-class cricket for Tasmania. His father was a renowned cricketer who also went on the 1985–86 and 1986–87 rebel tours.

James Faulkner captained the Tasmanian under-17 team and also played in the under-19 team and second XI. After showing his extraordinary skills, he bagged a state rookie contract for the 2007–08 season. Despite facing early setbacks and failures, Faulkner remained undeterred and continued to work hard on improving his game.

Rise to Prominence

Faulkner’s rise to prominence can be attributed to his remarkable performances at the domestic level. He quickly made a name for himself with outstanding displays in various tournaments. He was in the under-19 Australian side at the 2008 ICC under-19 World Cup and also played for the Australian Cricket Academy in 2007. He became the man of the match in the 2012–13 Sheffield Shield final. This led to Tasmania getting the third ranking in the tournament.

Making his debut as a batter was also quite appreciable when he got selected for the first test in 2013. Faulkner showcased his immense talent at an early age. He played county cricket in England for Lancashire in 2015 and was awarded his county cap in 2019.

Between the years 2011 and 2017, another chapter of his cricket career began. He started to play in the Indian Premier League for various teams. The teams included the Pune Warriors, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Lions. He took 28 wickets for Rajasthan in 2013, becoming the third-highest wicket-taker in that particular IPL season.

In 2021, he played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), representing the Lahore Qalandars. In February 2022, he quit because of a disagreement with the terms of the contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board. Despite all his trials, his claims were denied. In reaction to this, he expressed his frustration by tossing his bat and helmet into a chandelier at the team hotel. Then he proceeded to throw his kit from the second floor of the hotel. As a repercussion, he was banned from playing in the Pakistan Super League ever again.

Over the years, Faulkner has reached several milestones and broken numerous records. He became the sixth Australian to take a hat-trick in 2016 during the second ODI against Sri Lanka.

He earned four wickets across two innings but scored a crucial 89 in the second innings in Queensland. After that, his talent could no longer be ignored by the eyes of the world.

Turning to other leagues, Faulkner's impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been nothing short of extraordinary. Through the ups and downs of 2013, Faulkner went on to establish his name in the field. He made his international debut for Australia in the 2012 Twenty20 International against India. He scored 64 runs from 29 balls, including 30 runs off a single Ishant Sharma over. This led Australia to win the match. He became the second-fastest Australian ODI century-maker, reaching a hundred from 57 balls.

His skills were widely proven in the second ODI against England, where Australia was at 9244 and still required 57 runs in the last six overs. He scored 55 of those runs single-handedly and led Australia to victory with three balls to spare. This innings was compared with the famous match-winning innings of all time played by Michel Bevan in 1996.

He was a great asset to his team in ODI matches, serving as a middle-order batsman who plays both leg spinners and off-spinners efficiently. His prominent bowling techniques included topspinner and yorker-length deliveries as slower ball variations. In ODIs, Faulkner's aggression and consistency have made him one of the most formidable batsmen and bowlers in limited-overs cricket.
